24 Hours of My Day
The exhibition is called 24 hours of my day portray the beauty of Vietnamese life. Most of the ideas are originated from my surroundings. The exhibition is cultural connected and personal reflecting. Everything that I depicted in my artworks is a capture of daily scenes and objects that I see in Vietnam. Because Vietnam is a small community in which everyone lives near each other, a lot of ordinary scenes that I see everyday and find that interesting seeing people get together, drink coffee, buying food... have inspired me to create the artwork. The exhibition is divided into 3 main theme: food, people and scene. I used a related range of colors to connect the artworks together which are bright bold colors. This would help making the artworks playful and lively. Moreover, it would also express the idea of modernizing those traditional image of Vietnam today.
The exhibition will be arranged and divided into three sections: food and drink, landscape, and people-related theme. I used a wide range of acrylic paint, ink, watercolor and craft paper to create both 2D and 3D artwork. I want to portray everything I perceive in many art movements. Especially art pieces showing traditional value in it such as the Pop Art Vietnamese Girl, this painting was inspired by Pop art movement. It portrays Vietnamese women which express the cultural and traditional beauty but a little bit of modernized. The lady is wearing ao dai which is Vietnamese traditional costume and wearing non la as one of the popular image related to Vietnam. The painting shows another way of expressing Vietnamese beauty of a unique perception of Pop Art which is inspired by Andy Warhol with color palette in the Pop Art art movement. The exhibition is focusing on capturing things in a realistic portraying. Majority of the art pieces are painted realistically but some are not because different styles and art movements are picked to express the topic. Vietnamese beauty is also expressed through food theme art pieces in the exhibition such as: Banh Mi Cart, Sculpture of Pho, Vietnamese Coffee… The intention of giving dimensions to the exhibition is achieved by creating Sculpture. It was created differently than the other art pieces because its size was enlarged. Banh Mi Cart was created and arranged in a 3-dimension setting. It was portrayed using acrylic paint and watercolor on A0 paper. The watercolor paintings would be hung in front of the cart. These pieces would eventually remind people of what they usually see in their daily life in Vietnam which mostly the people find it too usual and don’t even care. Sculpture of Pho is also another enlarged sculpture which depicted the popular Vietnamese traditional food. The inspiration was getting from Claes Oldenburg who is best known for his public art installations featuring large replicas of everyday objects. Three bowls of pho would probably impress the viewers and remind what they eat in Vietnam. The number of pieces of one art piece is usually one or three which can somehow relate them together. Three pieces are created in the same subject matter but somehow depicted in different views and different medium used. With the same artwork like Banh Mi Cart which combine 2-dimension and 3-dimension value, Street drawing is created and cardboard is used as the material to give 3-dimension value to the drawing.
With these works, I wanted the viewer to have a visual about my personal life in Vietnam and reflected on their own life. Each piece represents an object or a scene that they would usually see in Vietnam. The food and drink themed artworks would be hung near each other and the same for people themed and landscape themed artworks. Because of the bright colors used in the artworks, the background choice would be rice paper, which only have simple color. At first, I had trouble choosing the range of colors used in each piece of artwork and also how the theme would be connected together. I then decided to use my experience and my perception, from what I see everyday and capture it all into my artworks. With that, each of the pieces would be related to the theme that is personal and life-reflected. And the choice of colors would be bright and bold so that it would change things from normal captured into a bright and distinct look. The rice papers and the color of it would dim down the color of these bold and bright colors of the pieces. The view taken would be very important in the process of making the artworks.
